WHITE OAK CHINE STOCK

Chine is the intersection of the bottom and sides of a flat or v-bottomed boat. In his first book “How To Restore Your Wooden Runabout”, Don Danenberg says that chine stock, like the keel, should be clear straight-grained white oak in lengths long enough for your hull.

We work closely with a local sawyer who specializes in custom sawing green white oak specifically for wooden boat projects. He selects long and straight white oak logs to yield the best chine stock. The logs are then quarter sawn to yield as much straight grain along the entire length of the chine.

Quarter sawing is a specialized technique where boards are sawn off the log at a specific angle to yield the straightest grain. Consequently, more grain runs along the length of the board instead of the cathedral patterns you see in flat sawn boards.

We’re sure you’ll agree the outcome is just what you need and is perfect for steam bending. Call us for your special size if not listed at left.

WHITE OAK KEEL STOCK

The keel is the main structural member of a boat or ship that runs longitudinally along the center of its bottom. Though mahogany has been used in the past, the favorite choice today is white oak.

Our custom sawyer plain saws this stock from premium white oak logs, sawing clear stock where the growth rings run parallel to the widest face of the board. It’s these cathedral-like growth rings that wave across the face that help secure the numerous fasteners the keel is expected to hold.

Although we stock some, please call for your own special size. Caution, this material is green and requires particular care by you to ensure consistent air drying or ‘seasoning’ before use. Sold under limited warranty only.

OUR GUARANTEE

Your lumber purchases are fully guaranteed to be properly graded, measured and machined. LLJ does not guarantee products against loss or damage in transit due to circumstances beyond our control. To receive full credit for a returned package, the package must be in the same condition in which it wasreceived.

NOTICE ON LUMBER PRICES

Current hardwood demand is well below early to mid 2000 peaks but has shown modest increases through 2010 / 2011. This is due mostly to very large export growth of almost every specie of hardwood lumber. While domestic markets for hardwoods are still slow compared to the peaks of the mid 2000’s, production has also slowed in response and log inventories are also very low as most do not want to be caught with high priced inventories in regularly fluctuating market conditions. With this in mind, it is our goal to communicate accurate, timely information to our customers.
